Sierra Leoneans in the US prepare to celebrate Sierra Leone’s independence

In just twenty days Sierra Leoneans across the USA will celebrate 51 years of independence of their motherland. Events will be co-ordinated by the Save Sierra Leone Foundation in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Embassy and the Sierra American Soccer Association (SASA).

The weekend of Friday, April 27th through Sunday April 29th, 2012, will see Sierra Leoneans, dignitaries and other invited guests from all over the United States taking part in two major events to commemorate the country’s 51st Independence anniversary.

Celebrations will kick off with a reception and fundraising dance on Friday, April 27th and ends with a soccer match between the top qualifiers of a competitive soccer tournament to be held on Saturday April, 28th and Sunday April, 29th.

The fundraising dance will be held on Sierra Leone’s Independence Day, Friday April 27th, 2012 under the Grand Chief Patronage of H.E. Bockari Stevens – Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the USA and Canada. The venue is the exquisite and newly opened Loft Ballroom, located at 9375 Washington Blvd, Laurel, Maryland.

Proceeds from the event will go towards supporting organizations and committed individuals that are doing exceptional work in Sierra Leone in the areas of education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.

The international soccer tournament hosted by Sierra American Soccer Association (SASA) will be held at the Lake Arbor Community Center grounds in Mitchellville, Maryland.

Eight  Sierra Leonean teams; Atlanta, Philadelphia, Freetonians, Tigers, Ital FC, New Jersey, Sierra Delta of Virginia and Sierra Stars will be competing against soccer teams from Cameroon, Ghana, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo.

The first round elimination games will be played on Saturday April 28th starting at 12 noon and the semifinals and finals will take place on Sunday April 29th, 2012. The winning team will take home the Sierra Leone Independence Day trophy to be presented by H.E. Bockari Stevens.

Other key parties providing support to the celebration activities include international entertainment promoter, Raymond Paris of Kololo Entertainment Group, the New York based radio producer, Dennis Kabatto, the Sierra Leone Association of Artists and Musicians (SLAAM) and the Sierra Leone Arc of Hope.
