In a press briefing at the United Nations Security Council, President Julius Maada Bio issued a strong statement regarding the legal situation of former President Ernest Bai Koroma, who stands accused of involvement in a coup attempt to overthrow the Sierra Leonean government.
The allegations against Koroma have sparked significant controversy, with the former leader currently residing in Nigeria, raising concerns about his potential return to face justice.
The issue of Koroma’s whereabouts and his alleged role in the coup plot has been a topic of intense debate both within Sierra Leone and the international community.
President Bio, addressing the situation head-on, confirmed that Koroma remains in Nigeria and assured that the Sierra Leonean government is committed to ensuring that justice is served.
“President Koroma is currently in Nigeria, and all necessary steps to make sure that justice is served as far as everybody that is concerned in the alleged coup plot will be enforced,” President Bio stated emphatically. Who should get over what and move on where?
Does the fate of our country not still hinge on our finding a way out of the erosion of order and stability brought about by the theft of the 24 June 2023 election and the 26 November 2023 coup attempt that came in its wake?
Sometimes and for the good of the nation, people would be well advised to take their ethno-regional political hats off and put properly thinking ones on.
No proof but ill-motivated allegation. The supreme court could have been the legitimate venue for remedy to tripartite. Please get over and move on.
How very interesting! The alleged theft of the 24 June 2023 elections results in illegality, criminality and illegitimacy. Similarly, the alleged November 2023 coup plot also results in illegality, criminality and illegitimacy.
Can some seasoned mathematician or legal expert calculate the magnitude of these two orders of illegality, criminality and illegitimacy and tell us which is greater?
My point here is that the illegal and criminal act of stealing an election may have directly or indirectly led to the subsequent illegal and criminal act of a coup aimed at reversing the consequences of the stolen election.
This creates a scenario where two severe wrongs compound each other, resulting in even greater harm—specifically, political turbulence and generalized instability, that sword of Damocles currently hanging over our nation’s head.
To put it differently, one illegal act begets another, leading to a vicious cycle of illegitimacy and unrest. Trying therefore to quantify the wrongs is not only futile but also highlights the deeper issue: that both acts contribute to a broader and more dangerous consequence, namely the erosion of political order and stability.
How very ironical then to see Bio going ballistic in registering his determination to bring an alleged coup plotter in the person of Koroma to justice when he himself stands accused in the eyes of the entire world of a no less serious criminal act: daylight election robbery!
